Certified Wildlife Habitat – In 2019, Johns Island Regional Library established a pollinator and native plant garden featuring Gullah heritage plantings. Two librarians formed a partnership with Magnolia Garden Club and other community organizations and businesses. Two beds were initially installed and flourished. Library patrons could visit the garden or view it from inside. More plantings were added and programs for both children and adults led to a broader plan to create a wildlife habitat. Bluebird houses were added, then an owlet house. This year MGC sponsored the Leaves and Letters Garden for certification by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), a partner of the National Garden Club and the Garden Club of South Carolina. Two plaques will be permanently installed at the library when renovations are complete.
